Bamboo is a grass plant, not a wood species. Bamboo is a group of woody perennial evergreen plants in the true grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae. Some of its members are giants, forming by far the largest members of the grass family. New shoots of some of the larger species can grow over 1 meter per day. They are of economic and high cultural significance in East Asia and South East Asia where they are used extensively in gardens, as a building material as well as a food source. In Chinese, they are known as zhu (Chinese: 竹; pinyin: zhú), in Japanese as take (Kanji: 竹; Hiragana: たけ, take?), in Korean as dae (대) or daenamu (대나무).

There are 91 genera and about 1,000 species of bamboo. They are found in diverse climates, from cold mountains to hot tropical regions. They occur across East Asia, from 50°N latitude in Sakhalin through to northern Australia, and west to India and the Himalaya. They also occur in sub-Saharan Africa, and in the Americas from the southeast of the United States south to Argentina and Chile, there reaching their furthest south anywhere, at 47°S latitude. Major areas with no native bamboos include Europe, north Africa, western Asia, Canada, most of Australia, and Antarctica.


Under ideal climate conditions, bamboo grows up to 1 meter in 36 hours, making it the perfect renewable energy and raw material source of the 21st century. LITRAX is dedicated to a complete green cycle. Our products come from the earth and should go back to its original natural status once the material no longer serves its industrial purpose.

What do we do differently?


LITRAX has engineered a unique, biodegradable textile yarn, based on the all-natural BioBamboo stem (bast) fiber, called LITRAX 1 (L1). The hypersoft LITRAX natural (bio) bamboo fiber is produced out of the stem and belongs to a line of finest and most advanced functional and at the same time natural wear fibers. It is produced in Europe. The natural staple length is between 70 - 150mm, but can be preset at 38mm in length.


The LITRAX 1 (L1) Natural Bio Bamboo fiber is made from 100% natural resources using a high-tech process that includes refining the stem fiber through an engineered enzyme process. No chemicals are added during the enzyme and mechanical opening, allowing the fiber to remain strong to produce an extremely high quality product. The existing Chinese (regenerated, on the right) bamboo viscose fibers currently on the market are entirely different and not quite a green chemistry. The only thing that makes it a "green or natural" fiber is the basic bamboo material used in the process.


Viscose is a viscous organic liquid used to make rayon and cellophane. Cellulose from either bamboo, wood or cotton fibres is treated with sodium hydroxide, then mixed with carbon disulfide to form cellulose xanthate, which is dissolved in more sodium hydroxide. The resulting viscose is extruded into an acid bath either through a slit to make cellophane, or through a spinneret to make viscose rayon (sometimes simply called Rayon). The acid converts the viscose back into cellulose. Cellulose is treated with alkali and carbon disulfide to yield viscose. A number of caustic chemicals are used in this process which weakens the regenerated chemical bamboo fiber significantly and has environmental issues. LITRAX proposes this fiber for casual wear. Most shirts are made from an Ne30 or Ne40 ring spun yarn, preferably with a minimum of 30% to 70% bamboo fiber blended with 30% or more cotton, tencel, merino wool, silk or other blends.
